In an interview on Fox News, Congressman Trey Gowdy is concerned over the latest story about Russia with a fear that it is undermining the current administration.
President Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., released a series of emails on Tuesday that revealed he had eagerly agreed to meet a woman he was told was a Russian government lawyer who might have damaging information about Democratic rival Hillary Clinton as part of Moscow’s official support for his father. These emails were from the summer of 2016, just after it was assured that Trump would be the Republican presidential nominee.
“Donald Trump Jr.’s emails about Russian help for his father’s campaign revealed a great deal about the imbroglio over the meddling in the 2016 election — but they also raised as many questions as they answered.”
President Donald Trump on Wednesday defended his eldest son as “innocent” and a “high quality person” following emails that showed Donald Trump Jr. welcomed Russian help against his father’s rival Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, deepening the controversy over Russian meddling.
Trump Jr., in a Fox News television interview Tuesday, said: “In retrospect, I probably would have done things a little differently.
In the immediate aftermath of this latest Russian story, Republicans have generally approached this new matter with a level of seriousness with the consensus that it hasn’t proved any Russian meddling or collusion between the Russian government and the Trump campaign. Yet, it is still a legitimate piece of evidence for Bob Mueller to use during his investigation into Russia’s potential meddling in the presidential election last year.
What’s Happening Now:
One of the Republicans who has weighed in on this latest revelation regarding Trump’s potential connection to the Russians is South Carolina Representative Trey Gowdy. He also serves as the chairman of the Government Oversight Committee.
Gowdy drew national attention in 2015 when he chaired the House Benghazi Committee where he presided over an eleven hour grilling of former Secretary of State and 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
In an interview on Fox News with Martha McCallum, Gowdy said Trump Jr.’s meeting with a Russian lawyer is concerning because it undermines the credibility of the Trump administration. He expresses his disappointment over this latest Russian story, most likely because it keeps this fresh in the news, hurting Republicans, and prevents positive stories of Trump’s agenda from getting coverage. Gowdy also fears that continued revelations surrounding this controversy will make Americans wary of the validity and legitimacy of this administration, further damaging the party.
From The Daily Caller:
“Gowdy explained that there are three levels of concern he has about the meeting, which was arranged in the hopes of obtaining information that was damaging to Hillary Clinton.
The first two areas, upon which Gowdy didn’t expand much, are the legal and political ramifications of the meeting. The third level, and his major focus, is the “amnesia” that seems to surround the Trump campaign when it comes to Russia.”
“Someone close to the president needs to get everyone associated with that campaign in a room,” Gowdy suggested, “and say, ‘from the time you saw Dr. Zhivago until the moment you had vodka with a guy named Boris, you list every single one of those and we’re going to turn those over to the special counsel.’”
“Because this drip, drip, drip is undermining the credibility of the administration,” Gowdy concluded.
